The Winners of the 2016 Devil's Kitchen Reading Awards in Poetry, Fiction,

and Prose Nonfiction

 

The Department of English at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and GRASSROOTS, SIUC's undergraduate literary magazine, are pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Devil's Kitchen Reading Awards.

 

In poetry, the winner is Emily O'Neill for her 2015 collection of poems, Pelican (YesYes Books).

 

In fiction, the winner is Jacob M. Appel for h1s 2015 collection of stories, The Magic Laundry (Snake NationPress).

 

In prose nonfiction, the winner is Michelle Herman for her 2015 collection of essays, Like a Song: Essays (Outpost19).



One book of poetry (book-length work or single-author collection of poems), one book of fiction (novel, novella, or single-author short fiction collection), and one book of prose nonfiction (literary nonfiction, memoir, or single-author essay collection) were selected from submissions of titles published in 2015, and the winning authors receive an honorarium of $1000 and will present a public reading and participate in panels at the Devil's Kitchen Fall Literary Festival at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. The dates for the 2016 festival are October 26-28, 2016. Travel and accommodations will be provided for the three winners. Judges come from the faculty of SIUC's MFA Program in Creative Writing and the award winners were selected by the staff of GRASSROOTS, SIUC's undergraduate literary magazine.

THE AWARDS WERE THE IDEA OF GRASSROOTS EDITORS MATT BROWN AND LINSEY MAUGHAN, ALONG WITH THE MFA FACULTY OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CARBONDALE.
