And you came into my hands,
with your bright green and blue feathers
and your pointed beak.
How nervous I felt!
There was a hummingbird in my hands.
I had always admired you from a distance,
watching your confident yet swift flight,
your eternal dance,
your transformative power,
the good luck you bring me.
Your subtle presence, your strong essence.
You chose me to rest.
You nested for eternities made of seconds in my hands.
I knew I would not have you forever,
that this was a path, a moment of passage.
And you healed, with the energy of the mother earth.
And in the stillness of a breath,
you regained your strength.
Although you could have gone,
in gratitude you did not fly far.
You visited us the next day,
and the next,
among the branches of the trees
in the backyard
of the old house in Nariño.
