When the News Hits

It sneaks up on you when you least expect it
It doesn’t fully hit when you first hear
And you stand there on the phone with your dad as he has to break the news
The numbness starts after the first tears run through
Having to tell your supervisor why you can’t come in the next day,
Emailing professors so they don’t wonder why you’re not in class,
Having to sit in your dorm as you wait for family to pick you up
(No one wants you driving in this state.)
Seeing your mom makes it hit even more
I have my mom, but she doesn’t have hers.
