Home

McKenna Morton

I asked my friend the other night
“When does college start feeling like home?”
She smiled at me sadly
And said
“It doesn’t.”

I feel like I am staying in a hotel for a long time
My stuff is here
My bed is here
But it isn’t home

And even when I do go home
It doesn’t feel like home
I feel like a stranger in my parent’s house
Like a visitor in my room

The stuff in here is mine
But it isn’t
This stuff belongs to 9 year old me
And 17 year old me
And every person I was in between
Not 19 year old me

I feel like I’m chasing that feeling of home
Running at full speed
Reaching out to it
But it’s always just out of grasp
Taunting me
Laughing at me

I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever be home again.
