How I Wish We Would Link as the Changelings Do

Takhor Sorakaliul

Our touch dissolves
Two become one
One becomes all
To drink the liquid of memory
Together.

Your mother barreling down the hall,
Electric fear rippling your ribs
The sweetness of your cat’s nosen kiss
Floorboard creaks tickling your bare feet
Beneath your tongue lies a lucky charm
The Gregorian comfort of the wind chime
Her voice was your atmosphere
Your heart skipped beats and your lungs were greedy
Blood cells march single file in your left eye, you see them
And your nose smells for you the back of your tongue.
I know now.

My father spoke words I cannot remember
But now you remember when I stood vulnerable in the shower
Swimming starblaze through my hands and face
The way my brother looked through me
And my teachers looked past me
Pencils were baseball bats in my palm
How I scorched extra work into the page
For the ecstasy of not needing to
The surface of Mars in my dog’s eyes
Fear of falling forever into the sky when I look up
Now you see.

When we touch
Let my bones melt into milk
My muscles into toothpaste
The nerves become plasma
Skin ripples like the night lake
Touching feeling, let
Desire become a field and
Mine and thine become a vine through time
Becoming is knowing
And we can become anything.

I want to bathe in the likeness of what it is to be you.
To make your third person explicable
My first person known
Your words into my memories
My struggles into your feelings.

Why is science fiction so cruel?
Deep Space Nine poked a thumb in my brain
I want to Link with
You like a
Passenger wants to get off a plane that flies forever.
Why does it feel like as long
As you are you and I am me,
We will never be us.
