Erin Philpott Childers
If you could peer deep into my soul’s disguise,
beneath my surface, behind my smile,
would you swim the ocean within my eyes?
Would you brave the waves and stay awhile?
Would you climb the mountains of my sickness?
Would you walk my deserts of toil and strife?
See my mind beneath the jungle thickness,
and undo the vines that conceal my life?
If you could find my heart beneath the veil,
and climb the daunting walls of sorrow high,
you would find a light—O bright flame prevail!
A patience my trials cannot defy!
If you could breach the facade I’ve built with care,
you would unearth the real me hiding there.
