A String of Fate

Lara Oues

Friends at first sight wasn’t the impression;
Her confusing expressions
Her unsensible dialect
All doubted if I was content.
But accurate tests aren’t at first—
Time determines the best and worst.
The best was mine.

Fast came the eternal goodbye,
Furniture moved from where they lie.
Fate determined by the U-Haul truck,
Reality nonetheless struck
And she hauled away.

The relationship tightly tied,
A bond suffocated by its knot.
Past of three years—we were an afterthought;
Adjective of “best friends” wasn’t ours,
Impoverished of the sisterhood.
The togetherness the string once kept
Outstretched and thinned to adapt.
Snap!
Time, fate no longer had for us.
