Rachel Robinson
i fell asleep to the thunder
and could feel the rumbling
in my teeth
and in my dreams;
as the earth shook
with a distant ship
pulling ashore
i awoke,
and the lightning was at my window
illuminating the silhouettes
of every tree for miles;
and they stood rigid
looking as though they felt grateful
that there were taller trees nearby
and just when I thought
i’d drift back to sleep,
a cat meowing
at my bedroom door
with a small mouse in her mouth
a gift,
in return for a place
nestled by my side
where she could be cozy,
during the storm
and i am grateful too
