Her

McKenna Morton

I want to have a daughter.
She would have a whimsical name
And would not know that loud noises equal anger.
I would braid flowers into her hair
And make cute dresses for her to run around outside in,
Just for me to wash the dirt out of them later.
I would tell her that she could do anything that she dreamed,
And I would love her more than anything in the world.

But, I can’t have that.
I want too many things in life to be able to have her.
Having a daughter would be selfish of me,
But, God, I dream about it every night.

To hug her and hold her hands,
To send her off to school and worry about her every second
I don’t think I am cut out for being a mom.
But I want it so bad.
It is my biggest and most shameful secret,
Though I could never be ashamed of her.
